SLI support on Intel X58
September 1st, 2008 Posted in GPUs
For a long time motherboard makers had to be using Nvidia nForce 200 chip for SLI to function. But, as reported by TechReport, now it seems that Nvidia is going to enable native SLI on certified X58 motherboards without the need of the nForce 200 SLI bridge chip. The motherboard has to be certified for manufacturer by Nvidia before an activation key for SLI will be granted. The provide encryption key (called a "cookie") will go in the motherboards BIOS which will be read by the Forceware drivers and will unlock SLI functionality. This means that, later this year, PC enthusiasts should be able to select from a number of Core i7 motherboards that support both CrossFire and SLI.
