New Nvidia GPU nomenclature

September 30th, 2008 Posted in GPUs

Industry sources suggest Nvidia will be dropping the 8000 and 9000 series names in favour of a newer naming system. Since the company is rumored to announce additional graphics cards in the GT200 series on October 15, in this date probably Nvidia will break away from its current nomenclature and will adopt a naming system that is in line with the GT200 series. The 8000 series is going to be phased out and all 55nm 9000 series GPUs will adopt a G100 series name. By the end of 2008, Nvidia will rebrand today’s 9000 series as G100, GT120, GT130, GT140 and GT150 models. On the G200 series side, we will have GTX 200 for extreme performance GPUs, GT 200 for high performance GPUs, followed by GS 200 for mainstream graphics products, and finally G200 for entry level products.
