AMD R800, RV870 and RV840 Expected Late 2009
June 15th, 2009 Posted in GPUs
According to Hardware-Infos AMD is set to release a lineup of DirectX11 compliant 40nm GPUs within 2009, targeting NVIDIA’s upcoming G300. Besides RV870, there will be R800 that consists of two RV870 chips, RV840 for mainstream market and RV810 for entry level market. Probably named as Radeon HD 5870, RV870 will be powered by 1200 stream processors, GDDR5 memory and bandwidth of 143 GB/s. RV840 and RV810 GPUs specifications are still unknown. NVIDIA G300 launch date is scheduled for late 2009, so AMD will release RV870, RV840 and R800 by the end of this year.

Interesting read.
What’s interesting about AMD’s strategy here is that it’s somewhat copying what Intel is trying to do with its Core i3, i5, and i7 series of processors: trying to simplify the GPU family.
By dividing the new series of GPUs into entry-, mid-, and high-level GPUs, AMD can effectively target each level of consumers.
I am also interested in seeing how these new GPUs will perform. 1200 stream processors, the large bandwidth, coupled with DX11, the combination of the 3 can produce some astounding and unpredictable results. But I am hoping that they will be absolutely amazing results also.
We will have to see who takes the first step: AMD or NVidia. This will be an interesting race.
Cheers!
