While the 45nm Shanghai quad core Opteron (Opteron 83xx series and Opteron 23xx series) has just made its debut at resellers, AMD is planning to launch six high end 45nm quad core CPUs (codename Deneb) and four entry-level (codename Propus) in the first quarter of next year. The Phenom X4 20550 and 20350 for socket AM2+ systems with core frequencies of 3GHz and 2.8GHz will be launche this month. AMD will also launch six 45nm triple core CPUs (codename Heka and Regor) including 14x00, 12x00 and 1xx00e series. These triple core CPUs will start shipping in the first quarter of the next year. To prevent impact on its mainstream dual core Athlon X2 CPUs sales, AMD has decided to ship its 45nm AM3 based dual core CPU (codename Regor) in the third quarter of the next year. The company has planned three 65W CPUs model numbered 10x00 for this last category.

GT2xx generation cards' life cycle is not over yet, the GT206 will be released in Q4 2008, presumably to cash in on the christmas shopping season. GT206, the last 55 nm cards, seems to be having problems with its shader domain, which has pushed its launch for that late. Following GT206, GT212 and GT216 would be Nvidia's entries to the 40nm silicon fabrication process, both will support GDDR5 memory on a broad memory bus. GT212 will be released in Q1 2009, GT216 in Q2 2009. Towards the end of the year however, Nvidia is planning to launch the GT3xx generation DirectX 11 cards.

The new chipset, based around the GeForce 8100/8200/8300, is basically the same as the MCP78 which it is superseding, with the exception of the added AM3 support. There are two version of MCP85, MCP85-S and MCP85-V, the only difference will be their clock and PureVideo versions. The new chipset will hit the market in Q1 2009.

In his keynote yesterday at the Intel Developer Forum in Taiwan, Intel's senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Ultra Mobility Group, Anand Chandrasekher, discussed how technology innovation and strong industry collaboration have driven the digital economy over the past 40 years, and the universal impact that the Internet and mobile Web has had in people's lives. Chandrasekher cited the Intel Atom processor, the upcoming Nehalem processor, and the Intel Moorestown platform as prime examples of innovation and technology leadership. Also highlighted was the progress Intel is making in the Mobile Internet Devices (MID) market segment with the world's first working Moorestown platform demonstration. Scheduled for the 2009-2010 timeframe, the Moorestown prototype comprises of an SOC, codenamed "Lincroft," which integrates a 45nm processor, graphics, memory controller and video encode/decode onto a single chip and an I/O hub codenamed Langwell. Langwell supports a range of I/O ports to connect with wireless, storage, and display components in addition to incorporating several board level functions.

The Moorestown platform will support a range of wireless technologies including 3G, WiMAX, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and mobile TV. During his keynote Chandrasekher also stated that Intel hopes to revolutionize the MID world with Moorestown when released.
